Marvin Topolsky has just retired after completing his fiftieth season as a member of the bass section of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He graduated from Juilliard after having studied with Fred Zimmerman, double bassist of the New York Philharmonic. He then proceeded to the Houston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leopold Stokowski. After touring Europe as part of the Seventh Army Symphony, he played on Broadway with Mike Nichols and Elaine May.
Eric Ewazen’s Quintet for Bass and String Quartet was commissioned for him and performed by him with the Cassatt Quartet at the Juilliard School. He has also performed at Chautauqua and at Monadnock Music in New Hampshire.
